I discovered this region of the world when I responded to an ad seeking an "untamed physicist" to work in the San Juan Islands. Living in the Caribbean sounded really good to me. My geography may have been faulty but my intuition was not.
I took the job. I have lived on Orcas Island for 27 years now. I love my life here and am happy that my children grew up here.
My daughter Kristin who now works for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute graduated from Orcas High School and loves to hike. My son learned to stand holding onto the tiller of our sailboat. He now attends Western Washington University and is a member of the sailing team. He'll be returning to Orcas this summer to resume his duties as naturalist on a local whale watch boat.
For recreation I sail, ski, and fish. I'm a licensed pilot and certified scuba diver and play competitive volleyball on a regular basis with Orcas Island friends. Other hobbies include woodworking, construction and photography.
My wife Nanae and I recently built a house in Deer Harbor -- after several years in a 600 square feet cottage, one of my new joys is the ability to cook for family and friends in a "proper" kitchen.
